Soil Transmitted Helminthiases

Posted: June 17, 2011 in Health

Worldwide, Soil Transmitted Helminthiases (STH) is the third most prevalent infection, it is only behind diarrheal disease and tuberculosis. According to WHO it is ranked 10 among the world’s Top Ten infectious killer diseases. The prevalence of STH among people from two to five years old is lesser but they suffer the greatest impact of the disease when they get infected. Three major causes of intestinal parasitic infections are Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiurs, and Hookworm. These 3 are classified as soil transmitted helminths because their major development takes place in soil. Factors like temperature, humidity and wind are the primary factors which determine their distribution.
